The city of Durand lies along the banks of the Chippewa River as it flows to its confluence with the Mississippi River twenty miles downstream. Miles Durand Prindle founded the city in 1856 and named it after his mother's maiden name. As the county seat for Pepin County, Durand's stately 110 year old courthouse is the only remaining wood-framed courthouse in Wisconsin. The Old Courthouse Museum and the Jail next door are both on the National Register of Historic Places.
The leading industries in Durand are education, health, social services, and retail trade. Five private and parochial schools and the Durand School District comprise Durand's educational services.
