Welcome home to Whitehall, Wisconsin.
A simple wheat field was to become the location for the city of Whitehall, Wisconsin. When the Green Bay and Lake Pepin Railroad Company started laying track from Green Bay in 1871, the proposed route took them through this Trempealeau County wheat field. The city of Whitehall came into being in 1873 with the first regular passenger service between Green Bay and Whitehall begining on January 1, 1874. The first depot built in 1877 burned down, but its brick replacement built in 1914 still stands and is on the State and National Register of Historic Places.
Nestled in the hills surrounding the Trempealeau River, Whitehall is a small city featuring a very active downtown business district. The city is also the Trempealeau County seat. Its economy is largely based on the government offices located there and agriculture. However, many of the amenities of a larger city are available to its residents including medical care, higher education, parks, and recreation, such as golf and cycling.
